Windy Day Eight

Whats happening in your neck of the woods ?

Windy Day Eight

Postby flipper » Sun Dec 11, 2016 8:33 pm

I planned to go hunting this afternoon despite the fact that the wind was blowing more than I like and in the wrong direction for where I intended to hunt. I don't usually hunt an area with the wind blowing wrong, but thought I'd go through the motions. After all, I have vacation coming up later this week and that's when I would be focused on getting a decent buck....... I had extra clothes on as I walked to my stand across the creek because it was windy, and although the temp was pleasant, I knew I'd get chilly as the afternoon progressed. My word! I was burning up when I got in my stand. Off came the jacket! Now, get out the phone and put your face in it. Isn't that what so many of us do??? I hadn't been in the stand 15 minutes when I heard something in the leaves across the field. Out comes a doe, and then behind her a buck. Ahhhhh, and he had a decent rack. Better than anything I had seen all year. The doe re-entered the woods. Unfortunately the buck did too. But...... I got buck fever BAD. Hadn't had it like that in a long, long time. And it was FUN!!!! I love that feeling. I was shaking so bad.......and the buck was gone! :bash: :bash: :bash: Two fawns came out and grazed south..... Oh, I guess I should say that the south end of this field I was looking over was perfect for deer to come out as far was the wind was concerned...... Then two does came out where the two fawns had emerged, all of them in the same vicinity as the earlier doe and buck. Then..... a doe came running out, followed by.....a fawn. (Sigh.) THEN, he came out! The doe and fawn gradually made their way angling across the field toward me. This wasn't good because if they got too far, they'd wind me and be gone and so would the buck. I had my crosshairs on him, but he was coming straight toward me, and with him picking his head up and lowering it repeatedly, I couldn't get a good shot. Finally, I had a chance and I took it. Down he went. Buck fever struck again. I unloaded my gun and lowered it to the ground and called my husband to bring the Mule. He wouldn't answer. Ugh! I walked to the buck and was just a little disappointed, for just a minute, that he wasn't as big as I thought..... Like Glenn said, ground shrinkage. (My husband calls that "earth tax.") Still a good eight point at 17 3/8 " inside spread. I pulled the buck off the fire ant pile and then walked back to the house to get the Mule and my husband. He fed cows while I dressed it. (He had to feed in the dark since I had him helping me with the deer.) Now......... I'm ready for my vacation!!!!! :party :party :party :partyImageImage
