Calling on the experts

Postby flipper » Sun Jan 01, 2017 5:00 pm

Is it possible this is the same deer? I kind of doubt it, but I don't know. First pic was taken at the end of last season. Second one was last month. Taken in basically the same spot.

Not sure if it's the same deer but they have similar genetics.
Any way it is a nice buck, but I am far from being an expert

Hard call the second one looks a bit more mature, but no way to know what changes took place over the year. I want to lean towards yes, since both in the same area.

I am far from being an expert, but I'm sure they are related. The second one looks much older than the first to me, so I would say they are different deer, but that is totally a guess.

It's really hard to tell unless a buck has a unique caristic that you can identify like a split tine or a crab
Claw still good ones

I'm just adding this.
IF
This the same buck he has life/survival issues and his antlers should change with an additional year of aging.
I do think the bucks in both pics are related.
Back in 1989 I killed a huge 6 point and had him mounted, two years later I killed an 8 point and a friend of mine killed a 9 point on the same day within 100 yards of where I killed the 6 point. After comparing the mounts and antler shape "We thought the two bucks" were my 6 points offspring.
But this is just thinking we did not do any dna testing.

just throwing my .02 in, I believe it is the same buck. Body structure, face and horn growth tell me this. No expert by any means though and my wife tells me I'm wrong all the time but I don't think she's right!

I don't think they're the same. The 2nd buck has both beam tips that curve upward and longer shaped brow tines. He also seems to have a slightly larger throat patch but that could just be the angle of the head. Either way they're both nice bucks and both posing in the daylight for you. :D

Well I thought that over a years time the antlers would grow and possibly curve some and gain some mass, and with that added maturity his throat patch would be larger too. Thanks for the info!

Oh It could definitely be the same buck I just don't think it is. It all comes down to a guessing game anyway. I find myself saving pics of spikes and other small bucks with nicks in their ears or other distinguishing features so I can go back the next year or so and see if I can notice the same ones.

I got this one this year that I'm almost 100% sure is the same buck. The hard antler pic is last year and the velvet is from pre season this year. I haven't got any hard antler pics of him this year but I'm still hoping he's alive. I'm also fairly certain I had pics of him year before last but they're stored on a locked up laptop. :bash:

Same deer, I can guarantee it. As of tomorrow, I will have 59 years of experience studying them. Only Bigsteve, and a few others who were born, before there were any deer in Mississippi, can say that they are experts. We know a few things. Because we have seen a few things.

Those are 2 great shots really showing how they change from pre rut to rut. Just for the heck of it, here are a couple of more picks of deer #1 with his head down.ImageImage

I'd say different deer. The brows are weak in the pic last year especially the right one and to me the left side looks to have palmation. The brows are 4" long in 2nd pic. I'd say diff deer but I'm no expert.
