It happened

Getting down out of stand Saturday evening and taking my attention away for a sec looking over my right shoulder just as I was making first step down out of 15' ladder stand, nothing to grab back back on too before gravity took over. Luckily no surgery required, fractured humerus with 3 month full recovery. I haven't done much for the team as of this point but glad I can type!!! Hopefully I still get lucky before season over.

New stand New spot by invitation, assumed a ladder stand didn't require my harness. I would of been unattached at this point coming down. Can never be focused enough on descent in future. I was talking with Shumway about a harness that adjust as you leave ground and come down. I will be getting it soon. Also I understand there is a law that MS passed stating you must have a safety harness???

So glad you're okay jaystew! ...... I don't know about the law, but a harness is a common sense thing, kind of like a motorcycle helmet. Some states don't have laws, so it's up to you. How much do you value your health/life? What I want to know is do they make harnesses for tripods? That's what I hunt out of if I get off the ground. It's risky climbing into those too. Most of the time I climb holding my gun, but it's always unloaded.

i havent' heard of any "law" for MS requiring it.. shumway may be talking about a safety line that you slide your prussic knot up (or down) as you climb

I agree with all of you, careful at all times, common sense and all. I def don't need a law to require me to be safe but was curious about it being a law in general. I let all my safety guards down this one time and that's all it took.

I am glad it was not worse and you are still here to type and talk to us. I use a lot of 15 ladder stands and wear my safety harness and attach in the stand. Coming down or going up is something else altogether. I always try to be super careful, but all it takes is one moment. I need to look into the safety line.

Wow you are very lucky it's not worse. I can't stress enough about a harness. A harness using a ladder stand will require a life line. Once the line is on the tree you are attached 100% of the time. Most accidents occur getting in or out of the stand. Glad things kind of worked out for you as they could've been much worse. Count your blessings.

That could've been much worse. MS doesn't have a state law about wearing a harness unless you're on a WMA or federal refuge. If on private land it's strictly up to each hunter as to if they're willing to gamble with their safety or life.
I still hate Commies, even after they changed their name to Liberals.

Thanks for each of your words of wisdom, I am truly thankful it's not much worse. I like many often times think ,"it's not gonna happen to me" but the only way it's truly not going to happen again is being secured in. I served in Iraqi freedom and desert storm and I've never been more vulnerable in my life like I was laying there helpless for what seemed like forever. Thank you Jesus for sparing my life with my awesome family and another day to hunt.

Jaystew, please invest in a harness and put lifelines on lokons and ladders. The small cost for safety is paramount. We spend tons of money for insurance like vehicle, health and home.... what is your life worth?
