leepurvis,
Thanks for the kind words but, I was just trying to do a little bit to lift an outdoorsman brother up during a very depressing time in his life. I feel like anyone else on the forum would do the same thing. Even for a black bear fan.

It would take a black bear fan to write something like Firecloud's essay. Arrogance in the face of constant defeat. It is a trait they all seem to share.

Not that I have to explain why I "hunted" from the ground, but I will take a few moments to do so. I know some of you are not black bear fans and therefore are too lucid to believe what Firecloud has posted. I do this for you.

First of all, I am not a pine goat hunter. I hunt squirrels. And, after observing Firecloud's attempts at both squirrel and deer, I have yet to see a type of hunting in which he excels. Possibly he and his cat are good mousers. At any rate, I stayed on the ground due to the leg injury I sustained during the morning squirrel hunt. My leg tried to cramp all afternoon and I was forced to "sit" standing up. I leaned against a pile of dirt pushed up by the logging crew that was on our lease during the summer. I really didn't consider myself hunting so much as watching the plot (over 100 yards away) and trying to keep the leg from siezing.

I really never expected to kill a deer myself and was not nearly so disappointed in my own "hunt" as I was in Firecloud's. His constant bragging about being the best traditional (instinctive) bow shot ever along with his incessant babbling about all aspects of his weapon's design and use (a weapon that I have been familiar with for 30 years or so I might add) made me almost certain that, with that type of skill and knowledge, he would kill every deer on the west end of our property. That turned out not to be the case. I would imagine that he made too much noise to see any deer as his cat was not there to keep him quiet. More typical black bear bravado with no results at the end.

I would like to touch on, just for a moment, the archery shoot we had prior to the hunt as Fircloud also made mention of my shooting skills. What he failed to mention is that I picked up his bow, for the first time ever, and promptly shot it more accurately than he did. Now, he pointed out that I shot at and hit a yellow leaf. I admit that that particular mound was a target rich environment but that in itself does not mean that I missed my intended target leaf and struck another similar leaf nearby.

The part about placing the post-it note on the stick is true however. Firecloud did do that. Then he proceeded to miss said post-it note by such a wide margin that we had to look for the arrows for several minutes. When we finally did locate both arrows I shot one into the mound just to the right of the post-it note and the other close enough to move the stick to which the note was attached. I honestly felt Fircloud's reaction would be one exhibiting much chagrin but, he suprised me again with his smile and looks of awe. He replied something about me not only be a great squirrel hunter but also an awesome bow shot and thanked me again for being able to hang out with me. I think he was deeply moved by the moment. Firecloud compared it to stepping in the ring with Mike Tyson. He said yes the defeat was humiliating but it was such an honor to be competing with one so skilled and well known.

So, now you know a little more of the real story of our hunt.

This was a great read even if it is old. No telling how many deer walked past me while I had my head stuck to the iPhone. It really reminds me of the stories in those Robert Hitt Neill books like "The Flaming Turkey."

Is it the same one we use to use? I guess most of us use Tapatalk now, so we don't see it.

Firecloud was being discussed again on the facebook. This stuff is still good.

I should have written a little more about Firecloud taking his ex-wife the okra. I am still certain that was code for a rendezvous of some sort. :rotflol:
