Well, shucks!!

Whats happening in your neck of the woods ?

Well, shucks!!

Well, I shot a really nice buck Monday evening just before dark. I would be confident saying it was bigger than the ones I have killed the past 2 seasons easily, maybe 140" + conservatively (may as well be a Boone & Crockett here in Stone County, he's probably 5 or 6 years old too) and I think it was a 10 point. My friend who lives just down past me and I followed a good blood trail all the way to the creek, which was flowing out of its banks. We couldn't find where he came out on the opposite bank, and we searched up & down the creek on both sides, but the creek was rising while we were looking, and the swamp was flowing full of water.

My lab Coco acted like he might have bayed something, but we couldn't get to him & he swam back to us instead of staying with it. We were so turned around in the dark and flooded creek swamp that I don't know exactly where we were when he was barking. I know he was on an Island where the creek forks & then comes back together, but it got flooded as well. I guess I'll be looking for buzzards & listening for coyotes. It was the first deer I've shot with my .44 revolver, though not intentionally. I was just carrying my pistol with me while walking to check a trail camera. I rounded some brush & a small thicket to get to the camera & there he was, standing in a trail at about 15 yards as if he didn't even know I was there. I managed to get off 2 shots, and he didn't even move until the 2nd one.

I hate that for you. I hope for your sake it was not a fatal shot and he will recover to give you another opportunity.

Is there no way to cross the creek? Be hard for me not to atleast do some daylight looking.

Good idea on carrying the pistol! I left mine in my truck yesterday and about got attacked by not one but 3 bucks in hot pursuit of a Doe. Needless to say I was sick. First deer I've seen in daylight on the place and there I stood with 2 mounters running all around.

We crossed the creek and looked all up & down it. I looked in the daylight, but everything was flooded much worse that next day than the evening before.

Found the deer this afternoon! He's a 10 point and the biggest one I've taken off my place. I green scored him at 149 and some change. I can't get photobucket to work for me, so whenever I can figure out how to post pictures I'll post some of the rack.

Well, here he is! I taped him at 149 and some change, and 147 2/8 net (green of course). He's only about 14 & 1/4" wide, but that gives him some unique character IMO. I might actually have to put these on a plaque instead of hanging them from one of the rafters in the shed, lol. Boy, the look on my wife's face was priceless when she came home and saw this thing boiling in my concoction in a pot on her stove!

Glad you found your rack but sucks losing the meat. My wife would kill me boiling a head inside on the stove.
