vortex scope
Anyone try a Vortex scope? I'm a leupold guy and have not had much luck with low end optics but I've read lots of good reviews on Vortex and they have a lifetime warranty. I have a 222 I want to put a bigger scope on and was thinking about trying a 4 x 12 x 40mm? Any thoughts about these scopes?

Re: vortex scope
I bought the Vortex and it's clear enough but I had to order taller mounts for my old Sako because the bolt touched the eye piece ? It's an early 1960s Vixen .222 . Oh well if the vortex does'nt suit me I have a 3x9x50mm leupold that will work with the taller mounts.

Re: vortex scope
I like them other than the fact they have a torque rating of only 18lbs on the rings which is less than any scope I have ever mounted. And trust me if you torque them to the normal rating of most scopes (around 25lbs) they will break. Dont ask me how I know this
. And I am telling you I dont feel that comfortable with just 18lbs. Like GTK, I have a pair of 10x42 Viper binos and they are the best binoculars I have looked thru that are less than $1k. I can look thru them for hours with no fatigue whatsoever.

Re: vortex scope
I've never had an issue torquing the screws.

Re: vortex scope
Torquing the screws was not an issue at all. However, the over torquing of them according to their specs was. Caused my zero reset turrets to not adjust whatsoever. Broke both windage and elevation. When I called them the first thing they asked was how many lbs did I torque them to. I should have read the torquing specs before I installed scope but I never dreamed it was that light and just 7lbs over would break the turrets.

Re: vortex scope
This is what they say about it.
A common misconception is the need to really crank ring screws to ensure the scope doesn’t slip under recoil. Over torqueing can lead to tracking issues due to flexing of the outer scope tube, which impedes functioning of the internal erector tube (the part that moves when adjusting your turrets). Crimped scope tubes can also result, which is an unfortunate and permanent issue. Ring halves are not supposed to touch. Once tightened in an alternating fashion, much like you would tighten the lug nuts on a tire, there should be equal spacing/gap between the top half and bottom half of the rings (applies to horizontally split rings). As a general rule, 15 to 18 inch pounds on the rings is more than sufficient, even for magnum calibers. You can be slightly more aggressive with the ring to base connection with 25 to 35 inch pounds of torque.
They also will not warranty it if you happen to over torque.

I got one you can use anytime. They are handy. Ha, I know about over torquing just never dreamed that their torque specs would be almost 30% (or more) less than any other manufacturer that I know of. I will read specs on every individual scope from now on, ha.
