GTK....Trail cam question

Postby ufgators68 » Wed Aug 09, 2006 9:00 am

How do you get the fresnel aligned on your cams?? I thought I had it when I first put the cam together but it's off and not by much either. According to the little circle in the center of the fresnel, I need to move it down about half it's diameter and maybe a quarter of it's diameter to the left.

Does it really make that much difference if it's off that little??

Hi Reb..

Sorry, i must have overlooked this

Anyhow, this is how I align my fresnal lens.

You need two pieces of string or fishing line, and a "fat" straw like from mcdonalds.

I get everything drilled & mounted, except the fresnal lens.

Close your case up, cut the straw to the same length as your stand offs.

Slide the straw over the PIR element.

On the outside of your case take the string and form a "cross-hair" over the center of the straw.. Tape the string down really good so it will not move on you.

Then you can open the case back up, remove the board, and install your fresnal lens using the cross-hairs on the outside as a guide.

For a couple more ideas, they just posted on this subject over at hags..

Thanks. I saw that thread over there after I posted this.

Hopefully, I'll get the replacement glass I need this weekend and get the fresnel aligned and put that sucker out. I'm ready to get some deer pics instead of dear pics.   My wife doesn't know it but I have about 100 IR pics of her.

Reb,

you have stated you did IR on your cam. Is the range any better than just normal flash ? or about the same ?

I hear the IR is a fairly straightforward modification.

and what glass are you waiting on ?

If its just the lens cover, I would go to walmart and buy a cheap glass cutter (about $3.00) and then head over to home depot or any hardware store, and ask them for some "scrap" glass.

the guy at HomeDepot loaded me up on scrap pieces of glass, that I cut in squares to fit whatever..

I don't really know about the flash range, it seems like it picks up light farther than just the normal P32 white flash but I could be wrong.

The glass I'm waiting on is the IR filter glass. I've called every camera shop I can find and ZERO of them carry it. :( :(

I didn't know that the PIR sensor was so....sensitive!!. My fresnel lens is only off a very, very little bit. I measured dead center, as well as I could, and it needs to move from the center of the circle up to the top of the circle. That's all it needs to move!! That little sucker is going to make me bang my head on something. :x :x Hopefully, I'll get all of that done next week and can get it in a tree!! I'm ready for it to start paying for itself.
