What Is A Primitive Weapon

Postby jbullard1 » Wed Mar 03, 2010 4:35 pm

Looking for totally honest answers from everyone :2TU:

For me I do not think a primitive weapon is a cartridge gun of any kind or an inline muzzleloader because :
My one and only inline has killed deer at 195 yards so it is equal to my 45/70
My 45/70 has killed deer at 215 yards with the closest shot being 165 yards.
I'm no bowhunter because of a shoulder problem but would love to shoot a longbow, recurve or even a compound

To me a Primitive weapon is a caplock or flintlock muzzleloading gun or a Bow

I believe it is a gun that loads from the front and ignites on the SIDE. My son has an inline that I traded a fine martin Hatfield for. It shoots good with the scope and all but it aint primative by no means. We, my 14 yo son and 13 yo twin daughters, shoot primative guns and bows. I try to make all the gear I can and am starting to cast some .445 balls for my 3 .45s. I am wanting to build a .54 side slapper and .54 flinter. Hopefully over the Summer.
I have heard of that bigsmoke on TMA, that's where I got my new handle. It fits because I am 6'6" and 300 lbs and love to shoot black powder. bigsmoke

muzzleloader either flintlock or percussion cap and recurve bows, although I do like my 45-70 and my compound :D

No, I wish I did have one. :ylsuper: I would love to shoot one. My biggest is my .54 Traditions. If I load heavy it will jump up on me . It is very light and if I shoot a maxiball with a heavy dose of bp, it will get up.

Primitive...flintlock or caplock....a wood stock, blued, browned or in the white barrel and hardware.
Someone will usually throw out the in-line being around as long as the others and use the Pauley for an example. The Pauley didn't have a plastic stock, stainless steel barrel, variable light gathering scope or shoot a plastic saboted bullet with the latest and greatest replica powder.

True primitive would be a flintlock or a cap-lock and a long bow or a recurve......i do shoot a in-line most of the time but will bring out the old smoke pole from time to time....a T/C hawken's with a patched round ball

For Deer

Rifle...Metal open or peep sights. matchlock, wheellock, flintlock, precussion sidelock or under hammer, and must be loaded from the muzzle. .40 Caliber minimum.

Pistol..same lock work as above and must be loaded from the muzzle. .50 caliber minimum.

Revolver.. Percussion using a #10 or #11 percussion cap. Lead ball, or all lead bullet. .44 caliber minimum. No centerfire or rimfire.

Bow... Longbow or recurve. Wooden arrows, two bladed broadhead, and 45# minumum.

With new powders, metals and bullet design, the 45-70 is about as primative as tomorrow! Single shot rifles would let in rifles like the Ruger #1 and Browning High Wall.

Just my humble opinion and all 2¢ worth. :D
